A great insight into the world of F1 Albeit told from the lens of a mechanic there is definitely a bias here the constructors trophy is all there is the driver s championship What are these drivers of which you speak That is a little unfair but you get the idea Definitely recommended if you are even remotely interested in F1 And it is a real page turner even if you do know the endings
Unvarnished view of F1.Matchett gives a blue collar view of F1 from a person of exceptional skill, dedication and capacity to endure He pulls some punches, I suspect, but that is understandable What he writes strikes me as accurate He has some other views and anecdotes he chooses to keep to himself.
First Hand Experiences of an F1 MechanicI ve always enjoyed Steve s insights as a commentator on MSNBC s F1 race coverage This book details how he got the experience to have those insights I ll definitely be checking out his other books and missing his presence now that the broadcasts have moved to ABC.
Matchett s three books follow distinct paths the first an entire year with a championship winning team and the third a look at how to put together a fast race car This second book focuses on life as part of the pit crew From getting the job, through winning and losing as a team, to desperately trying to get out, the book expands on its predecessor with experiences from the F1 paddock.Rather than covering a single year, this book spans a decade, starting with how Matchett found his way into F1 I [...]
Not quite a 3 this place needs half stars An entertaining read, you don t have to be a gear head but you do have to be at least a passing fan of F1 there isn t quite enough background to capture someone who had never watched the sport Also, he meanders a bit, which can be cool but the transitions back and forth aren t fantastic There was sometimes a lot of rich detail about events in his life that have nothing to do with racing and sometimes almost none about the team or race or season, and some [...]
This is a must read for anyone with a minimal interest in motorsport A true and honest story from someone who has experienced the pros and cons of being part of F1 I really enjoyed the description of the author s career path and increase of his self confidence as his role within the team gained relevance.I really enjoyed seeing how someone from such humble origins can end up having a close relationship with the best F1 driver in history, or marketing tycoons like Briatore I liked learning about [...]
Feel the excitementVroomVroom Cause this book will definitely get any F1 fan on a hot lap through the pages. Most of what I know about F1 is centered around the driver and the cars on the track So, this was a nice treat to hear it all from the boys working in pitlane and the factory Matchett truly captured a compelling period to write his book too We see his narrative weave through the end of the Senna Prost McLaren Honda years, the early 90 s driver aide cars and Williams dominance, and the emer [...]
It s clear that Mr Matchett is not an author The book isn t particularly well written and the author goes down far too many tangents Still, it isn t terrible The title of the book and the subject matter implies that you will gain insider information and behind the scenes information of Formula One, specifically the 90 s era There are bits and pieces of this throughout the book but these are interspersed with mind numbing sections about the procedure the author went through when writing and publi [...]
I can t believe how good this was.a regular bloke just working on cars gets into Formula 1 and well this is his story many nuggets there is a Tao of Matchett that shows through so wise this guy is and so appreciative of life.a good look into a world and a very fun and quick read of an insider s view into a very exclusive world.I really love it, and knowing his voice and his comments from Speed channel coverage of F1, it has made it all the fun Ican t believe i put off reading this for so long.
Loved this book But I was an easy sell, as I already have a great affinity for Formula One, and had also worked as a race mechanic many years ago but not for Formula 1 Indeed, a lot of the allure was the way Matchett truly captured the roller coaster ride of a race mechanics life from intense pressure and excitement to huge disappointment and boredom But mainly incredible amounts of work for a pretty small paycheck, if you figure it by the hour I d recommend this book to anyone who wants to get [...]
Good Not great, but good.Matchett s a likable guy with a bunch of interesting stories and excellent insider perspective, but he tends to ramble about topics that are not all that interesting He spent time discussing the BBC broadcast center and a hotel in Australia than he spent on the death of Ayrton Senna and the hugely controversial battle of 1994 and 1995 between Damon Hill and Michael Schumacher. In the end, I m happy I read the book, but I m disappointed that it wasn t better.
Fantastic follow up book to Life in the Fast Lane In this installment, Steve Matchett shares the personal story of his path to and experiences of being a Formula 1 mechanic with Benetton Formula in the 90 s Mr Matchett s writing style makes for a fast and thoroughly enjoyable read that is filled with personal experiences, technical insight, and many anecdotal gems Highly recommended for anyone interested in Formula 1 or racing in general.
As a book in general, I give this a 3.0 3.5 If you have any interest in Formula 1, this is a 4.0 Since most of you could care less about F1, I have given it a 3 in the star ratings This book is a very good insight into the inner workings of F1 teams and personalities I am grateful to my friend, Robert, for the loan of this book.
If you are a fan of Formula One and Steve Matchett, you ll enjoy this book The things we love about Steve Matchett his resolute nerdiness, his support and knowledge of being a pit lane engineer, and his passion for the sport and history of Formula One it is all here He writes as he speaks, so even though the book was published over 15 years ago, he is very much present.
First half excellent Second half seemed like it was about writing this book than being a formula one mechanic Also, made a reference to his first book Made me feel like I read the wrong book.
Matchett, part of the Speed Formula 1 race broadcast team, chronicles his career in the pits of several F1 teams, including winning the World Driver s Championship with Michael Schumacher A well written memoir.
Of Steve Matchett s 3 books Life in the Fast Lane, The Chariot Makers and The Mechanic s Tale , this book was my favorite, by far This easy read takes you on Steve Matchett s journey from a guy who was interested in
Pretty good insight of life of a mechanic in F1 and what goes in F1 team during a season and off season the book is presented using a very simple English however it gets bit technical at some points but its worth it was a quick read too
This was a very enjoyable read about the authors career working for the Bennetton Formula One team during the 90 s Highly recommended to anyone who is a fan of motorsports.
Loved Matchett s prowess as a storyteller a very readable style He was fortunate to have participated in one of the Golden Ages of Formula One.
The definitive insider s account A must read
A treat for F1 fans
Great insight into life in the pit lane
I would rather read a book about the racing and not as much about a mechanic s life.
A look at F1 as it was just a few short years ago, out of date but still a good view of the inner workings of an F1 team Best for the fan of this sort of motorsport.
I m a big fan of Formula One and enjoy Steve Matchett calling the races His insight from a mechanics viewpoint is quite interesting and this book is a must read for any racing fan.
Good insights into F1 life beyond the star car and driver.
Interesting behind the scenes look at Formula 1 racing Focuses on the Bennetton team, for which the author worked, but also covers many other aspects of racing in those years.
