One of the best things about Valiant as a publisher and believe me, it s hard to pick just one are the lengths that they go to constantly create entry points for new readers Admittedly, while one could argue that this practice stems from a financial impetus than it does a creative one, there s still something refreshing about a publisher that rejects byzantine continuity in favor of keeping things simple, paired down, and character focused Plus, when the entry points are as grandly entertaining [...]
Aric the Visigoth goes all John Carter, Warlord of Mars Aric has left Earth because his is tired of fighting So of course he is impressed on his new planet What follows is Aric beating impossible odds to live through bloody awful skirmishes without using his armor The fighting and world building are both top notch The art by Tom s Giorello looks like classic Conan the Barbarian, it s stunning While it s ridiculously short at 3 issues and a bunch of filler , it s also brilliantly done.
That s like it I returned to this series because they decided to hire one of my favorite artists, but I actually really enjoyed the story as well I hope the series continues to be this exciting and wild I really enjoy when X O explores other worlds.
BCDER 64Semi realistic art style with nice slightly muted color palette The coloring looks like a mesh of pastel and watercolor technique, in other words, really nice Layout and realism level reminds me of a modern Darkhorse Conan book mixed with Black Science The storyline is very well executed but nothing an experienced reader has not read many times before I really liked the style of the few pages of Cadmium back history in the beginning of issue 3 Also, bonus points for a very easy jumping o [...]
X O Manowar Volume 1 Soldier by Matt Kindt and Tomas Giorello follows a soldier who doesn t want to fight any Will he get that chance Aric of Dacia was born in the time of the Roman Empire Now he is far from that time and planet He is known as Aric of Earth He wants to live at peace and raise crops He wants to never use the X O Manowar armor ever again, but when he is captured and forced to fight against impossible odds, he might have to rethink that He and his fellow prisoners are given impossi [...]
Matt Kindt writerTom s Giorello artistAric of Dacia has fled Earth, sick of a life of endless violence and war, and abandoned the X O Manowar for the peaceful existence of a farmer He has even found love on this alien world and achieved a measure of peace and satisfaction That is, until the feudalistic Azure Nation presses him into service as little than cannon fodder in their unending war with the dominant Cadmiums. This was an excellent book The writing by Kindt is sharp and enthralling, with [...]
This is the first time I ve ever read XO Manowar and I just loved the art in this volume It s very detailed and realistic This is short for a trade, containing only three issues The story isn t deep or complex but rather mostly battle fueled Aric has a background and is now on the planet Gorin War has become inevitable and Arin is conscripted into it, fighting for a race he has no allegiance with and fighting an enemy he doesn t really know Pretty much full on battle from start to finish with ju [...]
Conan in space So enjoyable and fun
It is too short that is the only flaw of this book Otherwise, this book is amazing I cannot wait when Aric goes full X O once again
Disclaimer I received a free partial galley via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.Damn you, Matt Kindt I swear it feels like I ve enjoyed every book I ve read from him so far This takes Aric of Dacia away from Earth and out of the X O armor at least for a little while The world that they ve settled on is war torn and Aric ends up being conscripted This book is great because it captures the feel for the character both in and out of battle While he has tried to put aside the armor and tak [...]
I got a free digital copy of this from Valiant through Netgalley. When I first downloaded this, I thought it said volume, but after I loaded it to read, I noticed that it was listed as 65 pages I thought I must have been originally mistaken because there is no way in hell a volume would only be 65 pages That s a giant sized single issue So, I started reading and on page 35 it said To Be Continued I thought I would go to the next page and see some bonus material to get me through the other 30 page [...]
X O Manowar 2017 Volume 1 Soldier by Matt Kindt is another example of what makes Valiant one of the better comic book publishing houses around today There is such a commitment to the integrity of the character and the story it is unyielding to the trends of the marketplace That may have hurt them from time to time, but overall it has resulted in some of the best comic book stories you may have never read Aric of Dacia was born under the rule of the Roman Empire and was taught the art of war from [...]
This should have been subtitled, They just keep pulling me back in A seemingly immortal human with magic armor is tired of fighting and goes off to another planet, finds himself a woman, and tries to be a farmer, only to get forcibly drafted into the local war When he not only survives being cannon fodder but achieves the mission s objective, he gets sent on a suicide commando raid by a jealous superior.I don t know if it was brains or experience, but it s easy to see how he survived the first b [...]
The re imaging of Valiant s premier character into an off world solider conscripted to fight in a war he s got limited historical context of is a sound move that pays off big time Not only does a new world allow for the creation of new characters and stories but it gives the alien armor wearing superhero a fresh start with a definitive sci fi kick pitting XO against unknown foes and establishing a whole new life for the character without the hang ups of his earlier earth and space escapades in t [...]
This was actually my first non Marvel DC comicbook ever I think , so it was both weird and exciting It was a pretty solid start, but since I m not familiarat allwith the world and the characters I could have used a bit world and character building I did, however, find myself drawn both to the characters and the story as well as the world the story is set in, and given the chance I believe I will be reading of this universe soon enough Also, the art was just straight up gorgeous An ARC was prov [...]
3 issue trade, man I m glad I collect the issues instead I love Valiant, because of their short story arcs and their brilliant writing, it s hard to pick up a Valiant book and not love it, they all are brilliant, and fresh compared to the big two, who seem tired and overdone Xo Manowar was my introduction to the Valiant universe and has a very dear place in my heart, this book is a great follow up to the Vendetti run, I love to see what Aric can do out of the armor 5 Xo rings of 5
Wow The new X O is my new favorite comic series from my new favorite comic publisher This is the beginning of a sci fi epic After having read the first 3 trades from the 2012 relaunch, seeing Aric voluntarily giving up the X O armor and still able to help lead rebellions on alien worlds is exciting Well written, good characterization all around, and some of the best art I ve seen in a comic in a long time Looking forward to Vol 2.
Serving as my jumping in point to the Valiant universe, this new run of Manowar is easily accessible It s also mostly well done, faltering only under some clunky dialogue and the fact that the overall story simply felt familiar with nothing to particularly distinguish it from other war hero stories.
I really dig Valiant s work, and this trade rebooting the X O Manowar series had a good story and great art, but it also only reprinted three issues That s rather short and abrupt, the one thing I tend not to like about Valiant s stuff.
Matt Kindt has written a fun and surprisingly thoughtful space barbarian comic And the art by Tomas Giorello is beautiful and kinetic I ve never read an X O Manowar comic before, but this makes me want to read .
Conan the Barbarian in space That pretty much sums this up Great script by writer Matt Kindt and absolutely beautiful artwork by Tomas Giorello I ve already ordered Volume 2 Highly recommended.
So X O Manowar is the best And this new cycle of Aric of Urth is phenomenal The art is amazing, and Kindt s ideas are insane and utterly engrossing.
Aric ups the ante and Tony is left standing in the rust.
A powerful deconstruction of the title character that looks at the horrors of war Incredibly cinematic and engaging.
Honestly, I see what is happening with a solid attempt to take X O to a different place and time But it at times was just a bit flat for me.
Two words Honk Shoe This could not have been boring Take everything interesting about the character and just remove it Terrible The first miss by Valiant since they restarted.
A surprisingly good reboot of the franchise At only three issues feels light but those issues tell a complete story and it has a lower cover price as well as good extras.
Old one hand More than enough to be an badass I dont know the older versions but this one is very good, recomend.
This is a great start to the new X O Manowar series The writing and art are fantastic Unfortunately Valiant got stingy and decided to make their already thin trade volumes even skinnier This is only 3 issues and some bonus art Worth a read, but not worth a buy due to Valiant s cash grab.4 stars for content2 stars for Valiant
