Very interesting mix of magic, politics and religion. The Teren north, most recently converted to the new religion, sits on the edge of the pagan territory Suhdra to the south, was the earliest area conquered by the followers of Strife and Cinder, the newest gods But the old religion won t go quietly,The gheists were the gods of the old religion, the spirits of stream and forest that the Tenerrans had worshiped for generations before the crusades Now deprived of their sacrifices and abandoned to [...]
This felt pretty old school and well, I love old school Give me an epic story and I am all in.We have a country that is really two countries The south those stuck up bastards and the north The south wants a piece of the north. Then we have the Church arghhh the church See, there used to be peace with the land Sure the old gods did a lot of damage but they, also cared for the earth And without them things are going badly, but the church is stupid and is all kill all pagans So yes you do not want to [...]
I ve been meaning for months to write this review ever since the nights I stayed up late to finish it The book is definitely a page turner, with complex characters reacting realistically to complex problems in their world I have really enjoyed Akers previous works he does an excellent job of world building and character development, but precisely for those reasons, his short fiction was very frustrating because I was allowed only a small glimpse into a fascinating world I always felt that the wo [...]
This is a great start to a new epic kinda sorta darkish fantasy series I apologize first and foremost, I am kind of down and sick so this week s reviews wont be very long.Easiest way to describe this book is classic epic fantasy with a Celtic middle ages flair, if you are a Game of Thrones person, this will be all up in your face, you will dig it tons.Great action, very interesting world, and I care about the characters, worth your time and money to read.
I get a little nervous when starting to read a new epic fantasy novel I have a whole world to learn about and understand, as well as new characters and plots to remember as the book unfolds There are a lot of epic fantasy stories out there and this book from author Tim Akers is the first in a new series of novels, so any help to ease me into the story would have been nice There s an obligatory map to make sure you know where you are which, as it happens, I simply didn t need as I didn t feel tha [...]
Originally published at Risingshadow.Tim Akers The Pagan Night is the first novel of The Hallowed War series it will be followed by The Iron Hound and The Winter Vow It is the author s first foray into epic fantasy and it s a good one.Because I had previously read Tim Akers The Burn Cycle and enjoyed it, I was excited when I heard that he had written The Pagan Night I m glad I had an opportunity to read it, because it s a strong and well written start to a new epic fantasy series It is without a [...]
Two and a half stars Akers put together a full world in The Pagan Night including political factions, religious heretics, family squabbles, and my favorite part ancient, elemental spirit gods of the land The story kept me entertained, but there were parts of the book that were frustrating to get through Point of view shifts within chapters, sometimes within scenes, made it difficult to feel close to some of the characters And continuous arguing between Ian and his father made them both much less [...]
Great battle scenes Akers provides just the right details to bring clarity to the chaos of clashing armies Aside from those epic moments, the story follows a host of complex and highly conflicted characters A lot of work went into this tale.Looking forward to the next book The Iron Hound.
4.5 stars. The land of Tenumbera once divided into the North and the South has now been united under the rule of the Celestial Church This involved the North having to relinquish its Pagan past and ways. This results in the old gods known as gheists being driven to madness by the lack of the faithful and their subsequent worship They now roam the lands in their demonic forms maddened, rampaging and causing terror wherever they go.The schemes of both the old and new gods and warring church factions [...]
I say thank you and goodbye to this series It s not awful, but I just never got a chance to warm to the characters before there was war and all hell broke loose I thought it was a pretty cool idea otherwise pagan worshippers protecting actual deities, fallen priests of the accepted faith Ah well.
A enjoyable if deeply flawed book kept my interests for the most part the magic system does not live up to the heights of a Sanderson or McClellan novel , and at times feels very clunky and confusing at times Still I enjoyed it enough to read the rest of the series
Good book, enjoyed the adventure.
By the old gods and the new, this was a fabulous book I won my copy in a giveaway I almost didn t enter because the summary didn t particularly grab me, and I m ecstatic now that I was able to read it When the book arrived, it was much longer than I expected I tried to take my time with it and failed, devoured in just a few days though it s better than the single day it almost was At the crossroads of Game of Thrones esque North v South and the crusades against Celtic Ireland and Scotland, The P [...]
Full review on my blog, Accio Reviews This book really caught me by surprise I had no expectations going in so I was completely open to embarking on an epic adventure, but I had no idea I would end up loving it as much as I did.Being the genre that it is the story alternates between quite a lot of different points of view, and that for me is usually challenging since I need some time to memorize character names and keep up with who is who Due to that the first 100 pages or so felt like the slowe [...]
Interesting Parts were good, some parts were very good the cosmology became fascinating as the book went on, some scenes were very vivid and even cinematographic I am really a fan of how Akers builds his magical and religious systems, and he just gets better each book he writes Overall, thoughwell, I set this book down for two or three days in a row, repeatedly I would always pick it back up, and will continue with the series, but And why I m not sure It is hard to identify, let alone explain P [...]
Torn on this one Love the world building, characters and the core story What problems I did have came from the voice style The good, very intriguing setting, magic, mad gods, old religions clashing with a newer religion, combined with family feuds, wars, vow knights and teen children clashing with parents Some wonderful imagery in places and the core story was compelling. The bad some of the phrasing jarred me out of the story, some I had to read three or four times to figure out what the author [...]
Published 2016 602 pages in this edition with Titan Books Aikers is one of the authors I truly admire and enjoy His steampunk novels never failed to entice and push me places his wonderful mind goes According to the authors notes this new series was birthed eight years ago and has seen at least 10 edits revisions combined And that, to me really shows Two books in the series are scheduled for 2017 and 2018 which means either these are already written or he s learned how to write faster, ha Immen [...]
This one was especially frustrating because I ve loved novels by Tim Akers before.I was left with the impression that the author didn t understand a the point of dialogue very little characterisation, many characters speaking have no agency, lots of pointless declarations by major characters , and b how combat works weapons flailing everywhere Shallow characters in general, and lots of telling vs showing. The major religion is pretty clearly derived from Catholicism, which in itself is a tired id [...]
I have to admit that I don t read much epic fantasy Since I know the author personally, I make an exception for him I can truthfully report that I m glad I did.A Pagan Night has a cover that suggests it s all about the swordplay Although there is plenty of swordplay to be had, the real heart of the story is about belief in Gods and in individuals This is character driven fantasy, in which realistic people do things including screw up realistically It s also, as you would expect from somebody wit [...]
I won this book in the giveaway section and this book is exactly why I enter the giveaways I love fantasy novels the most but I fear putting money down on something I don t know if I will enjoy or not I thoroughly enjoyed this book It s a little on the darker side of fantasy which I enjoy because sometimes the relentlessly upbeat Hobbit type books can get old to me I like that the world and politics are easy to follow and there are fun characters that get me invested in the outcome Overall I lik [...]
Fans of A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE will be thrilled with this new series by Tim Akers His development of characters, houses, countries and backstory were thorough, but still leaves us with some of those all important twists in the story This was a difficult book to put away when life interrupted, as I always wanted to know what was going to happen next at the end of each chapter Thank you, Giveaways, for allowing me to sample this book, and giving me something to look forward to as the rest of this [...]
Personally I did not enjoy this book The plot was great and the characters had potential however I feel like these should have been refined There was also a lot of events and characters that the author just abandoned Will I read the next book Probably Like I said the plot was amazing and left me curious, but the thought of having to struggle though another of these books is disheartening.
This was an interesting book It started a little slow, but as you gain knowledge of the world and the gheist it became harder and harder to put down While it is part of a series I think it works as a stand alone as well, if you don t want to commit to a full series.Well worth a read for fantasy fans looking for something with some fighting, cool magic, and a bit of different approach to demons.
Takes a little while to get going The early part of the book does not do much explaining of key points However, the plot does pick up quite a bit and the characters really develop I am intrigued to see what the rest of the series holds.
With a title like The Pagan Night, I wanted to enjoy this one, but it didn t hook me.The writing is good I just didn t connect, personally But I m super picky about my fantasy I imagine most readers of traditional epic fantasy will like it well enough.
If you like supernatural beings, religious warfare, the the struggle between good and evil, this is the novel for you The Celestial Church has conquered the Pagans but not they are starting to rebel It is the beginning work of a series My copy was a free review copy through.
I like the mystical undertone of this book Fast moving and interesting concepts.
I can t believe I finished this book so fast, but I could not stop reading it A fast paced adventure and an enjoyable read The characters came to life for me I can t wait for the second book.
I won this book in a giveaway Review will be added later.
