In short, this is an ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT BOOK about one of the longest sieges in military history, largely told in the words of the combatants and civilians who lived and struggled together to survive on the Mediterranean island of Malta between 1940 and 1943.

Kirsty

Wonderfully structured, fascinating, and I felt I learnt a lot.

Antoine Vanner

This book details not only one of the great epics of the 20th Century but also the heights to which the Human Spirit can rise There are thousands of heroes and heroines in this book not just the soldiers, sailors and airmen, but the civilians, the normal men, women and children who endured bombing and near starvation and won through to the freedom we enjoy in the West It s hard to single out any one episode for special praise, because the book is full of courage above and beyond all expectation, [...]

I don t give 5 stars easily But to write a 500 page book on the siege of Malta and keep my interest the whole time deserves 5 stars The I learn about this island the I become obsessed with it

Aleksander

I wanted to learn about the history of Malta, and chose this book to get an impression of its situation at one specific point in time, hoping to be able to connect the dots with its future and past My choice turned out to be a poor one, mainly because the book isn t really about the political entity that is Malta, nor about the ethnic cultural linguistic population group that is the Maltese it is about the British air force and navy fighting the Italians and Germans on a tiny island in the Medit [...]

Nishant Pappireddi

An excellent book about the role of Malta in WW2.

Ben Kesp

I will be honest, I am not a war buff nor would I pick up a book of this nature however it was loaned to me following a conversation on the bombardment of Malta during World II As the expression goes never judge a book by its cover and in this case I can certainly say it is true This was not the book I had been expecting Granted there are many technical aspects to be discussed concerning the battles, the ships, submarine wars, air forces, ground strikes, strategy and various tactics but what pul [...]

Poor lambs That s not how I d describe them I was thinking of animal sacrifice Ah That s closer Lois McMaster Bujold, Shards of HonorMy pragmatic takeaway from reading this and Leaves from an Autumn of Emergencies very closely together is, don t live on an island in the middle of a war zone Also, think about the UK and the Philippines In a larger sense it s hard not to feel sick to my stomach when I think about World War II I mean, yes, there is the massive mobilization and cooperation and pulli [...]

June 11, 1940 Italian aircraft pummel the idyllic Mediterranean island of Malta It is the first of than three thousand raids that the island will suffer as it becomes the most bombed place on earth The day before, Mussolini had declared war on Britain, and in that moment, the tiny island of Malta slightly larger than Cape Cod became one of the most important strategic pieces of land in the world Today, this valiant story is largely forgotten, but James Holland offers a riveting portrait of the [...]

Ralph Britton

An excellent account of Malta in the second World War, developed by very skilful combination of personal accounts we follow a selection of representative people through the siege I was surprised to discover a Polish submarine captain and crew operating out of Malta and American ace pilots in the fighters Malta gave the most unusual sometimes misfits airmen a chance to shine with minimal need to conform to air force discipline One man had his guns set at 150 yards as he only shot point blank and [...]

I had reached Holland s Dambusters and thought I d have a go at one of his earlier books This was the first Malta centered book on WWII in the Mediterranean I have read Strengths Best description of British submarine war efforts I have read Detailed and evocative Weaknesses Virtually no first hand point of views told from the German or Italian side Unlike Dambusters , which is a story of one raid and the crews who trained and participated, Fortress Malta is a story that unfolds over almost three [...]

Antony Kelly

I really fell in love with this book, I was doing some research on MALTA and its neighboring island GOZU so I bought it.An amazing story of human resilience and bravery The story would make an excellent TV mini series or an epic War Film.Inside it s pages, told through the eyes of real people, through interviews and diaries, I read the book in three days, I loved the multiple narrators and the little details, the descriptions of Maltese life, the nurses, the fighter ace s, the misfits. The sadnes [...]

I have always been interested in finding out how ordinary people faced the challenges posed by the Second World War and this highly readable book proved beyond a doubt that the brave citizens and defenders of Malta faced circumstances which are hard to fathom surviving with such good cheer and stoicism The author presents a comprehensive and chronological review of the events which plagued Malta throughout its time under constant threat of Axis invasion, from supply shortages to the perils faced [...]

In 1940 my Nana was 11 years old and living in a village close to Luqa airfield Her mother was the local baker, and had to close for 3 months as she was giving food to soldiers during the extreme and prolonged food shortages She saw first hand the horrific injuries and mutilation of bodies described in the book, and witnessed the pummeling of Luqa airfield by the Lutwaffe, as well as her own village which was extensively bombed She also suffered the diseases and malnutrition from the lack of foo [...]

Michael Richardson

I had the benefit of reading this fabulous book when holidaying in the south of Spain and with views over the deep blue waters of the Mediterranean I had the visual aspect all tied up James Holland s narrative was all I needed to propel me back to the days when those brave, brave young men took to the air to defend our liberty An amazing achievement with accounts from both civilians and the armed forces painting an almost 360 degree perspective of what went on, on that tiny but ever so important [...]

Peter Clark

What a story The story of Malta s crushing war is simply amazing Squeezed between German controlled Italy in the north and the Rommel s forces in North Africa in the south, Malta survived, or it could be said it was destroyed by, an astonishing onslaught Chapter by chapter it just gets worse and worse, until finally the pressure is eased.A good book to give the atmosphere of life at the time and the stories of individual lives during this time Inevitably a lot of characters, so it is a book that [...]

Fortress Malta provides a very good history of the siege of Malta and associate events convoys, north africa etc interspersed with a very personal take on day to day life of the islanders and the military personnel of all ranks who served there. This was the first James Holland book that I have read, and I was so impressed by his research and ability to tell the story in a fast moving but engaging fashion, that I have already ordered some of his books.

Fernand

Fortress Malta is the tragic story of a small island off the coast of Sicily This book tells of this island bombed by German and Italian planes, and how it responded to it.

Marilyn

Excellent book about the siege of Malta in WWII.

Ang

An exceptional, well rounded historical account Very easy read, putting aside the tragedy within A perfect starter for WWII Malta, reads.

Lee

Quite frankly brilliant.

Paul W

An engaging account of the siege of Malta and the role this played in the Mediterranean campaign in World War 2 With the right blend of facts and personal anecdotes, this reads like a novel.

Jim

Excellent The story of Malta in WWII is now almost forgotten It s peopled by a remarkable cast of real life characters.

Paul

bloody excellent account of Malta during WW11

Eduardo Corrêa

Amazing book.

Naomi Mercieca

This book is a beautiful read but I did wish that the Maltese phrases in the book were spelt properly and translated a little accurately.

Johns

Very readable a page turner for anyone interested in little known stories about the European conflict in the skies over Malta.
