Stableford has always been on my favorite list since THE BLIND WORM This was no disappointment Assembling four parts previously published separately, we are transported to a gonzo alternate England where Queen Jane rules, where John Foxe of Foxe s Martyrs commands the Puritan Inquisition, and Drake must prepare to combat the Selenite Armada It also incorporates much philosophy about the cosmos and evolution I am troubled by defects in the background research Stableford thinks that there were peo [...]

Stableford certainly has the background to write pre Steam Steampunk, Ether Punk or whatever label this novel falls under He sets an appropriate tone but in this reviewer s opinion the story itself is not quite up to snuff There are 4 chapters parts which at times feel like 4 loosely connected vignettes They were originally serialized in Asimov s.
