I feel as though this book lied to me.I was promised a suspense novel, instead it was a soap opera filled with numerous coincidences I had wanted to read the story of Philip Winters I wanted to read about his hardships I wanted to read of how his life took an unforeseen path I wanted to read twists and turns Whilst his life did take an unforeseen path, there really wasn t much to it.What we have here is a collection of individual stories with tenuous links Individually the stories could have bee [...]

There are several themes at play in this novel At the heart is Philip Winter, an employee at a high end department store in the U.K Philip is falsely accused of sexually attacking a female customer who asks him to deliver her forgotten purse to her home after hours come into my web, said the spider to the fly Angry at his rejection, the woman files charges and Philip is arrested, much to his wife and daughter s embarrassment A jury finds Philip innocent, but the public court and even his wife an [...]

This is the story of Philip Winter who, acquitted of rape, has still had his life turned upside down so disappears The tale also examines a group of animal rights activists, and the lengths they will go to to achieve their aim. This was a fairly enjoyable read, it passed the time, and was interesting, but it was nothing special The book was well written, and characters such as the illiterate youth, Denis, did gain my sympathy, but I suppose I just wasn t pulled along enough by the story. The book [...]

This is from Margaret Yorke s best period I discovered her work whilst prowling the stacks of Atlanta s downtown library in the days when my job often left me a lunch hour there. They are typically tales of personal suspense, a small but tangled web of characters whose stories ravel out with curiously little dialog yet a wonderful degree of insight. Some are better than others, and early in her career she did produce some novels that are romance, but probably anything from the mid 1980s onward is [...]

Don t feel as though you shouldn t read this book with its average rating The book is in no way a crime suspense themed one, in spite of what the back cover says The book felt light and mundane all throughout, but you do get curious about what happens to the characters I also did not like that a lot of the events happened by chance, but I liked Yorke s way with words, the way the story was told in a passive, third person view.

The front cover has a quote that says this author is the mistress of the skilfully spun suspense novel, so that was what I was expecting However I found it a bit gentle really, I liked the idea of the story line but it didn t have up til the early hour, not able to put it down as I wanted to know what happens next.

Sarah Adamson

A very enjoyable mystery suspense This book was fairly gentle in it s telling, along similar lines to Dick Francis books It was a real page turner involving some wonderfully interesting characters with some really exciting twists Very much enjoyed this

Swanbender2001

This was a first for me by Margaret Yorke and I plan on reading by her I enjoyed the parallel stories of the two obsessed characters and how they were taking those around them down with them The story was captivating and sad with its twists and turns.

Shirley

This seems to be my summer of Margaret Yorke mysteries Had never heard of her before this summer so I am enjoying reading through much of the long list of books she has written The description of life in small English villages coupled with real insight into human nature is the continued appeal.

Angela

A good read, with good characters

C.L.
