I collect cookbooks concentrating on how to choose and cook vegetables, and this one is a keeper Even before I started working methodically through it, I d dipped into it for recipes for kohlrabi, celery root, and parsnips Greene is especially helpful for creamy recipes if you want dairy on your veg, turn here The recipes of course predate the lowfat revolution, but do have their share of carbs calorie counts for veg are given, but not carb counts.Covered are Artichokes, Asparagus, Avocados, Bee [...]
This is one of those cookbooks that you can read through like a novel Greene s comments on each vegetable, including tips on selecting them in the store, are useful and fascinating My favorite is his story about his cat and asparagus tips she loved them and was not above stealing them out of the sink To this day I have not prepared any of his recipes but I use his tips all the time I have been so amazed to get much out of asparagus and broccoli by peeling the stalks before cooking something tha [...]
The only reason it s not 5 stars is that I haven t tried any recipes yet but almost every one excites me Another book I think I need to own With lines like this prefacing Myra s Potato Latkes Let me state at once that I am very much in favor of these weighty ovals how can you go wrong
You are about to be introduced to my favorite cookbook author It is not Bobby Flay It is not Nigella Lawson, or Julia Childs, or Deborah Madison, though I love them all It is none other than the lately underappreciated Bert Greene He, my friend, was a real cookbook author. He was born into creativity and an artistic flourish, and although the thrust of that was to be exhibited in the kitchen, he found an outlet for even of it through cookbook writing, restaurant ownership, TV appearances, and ra [...]
This used to be my go to book when the farm box came frequently full of vegetables that I didn t recognize Somehow it ended up packed a way in a box not to be seen for many years I rediscovered it this past week and was surprised how heavy many of the recipes seemed Could be just because it s 95 degrees in Chicago and the idea of eating anything remotely heavy is kind of gross or it could be that my eating habits have changed a lot The recipes were informational, dependable and of wide variety I [...]
Of all the food related books in my collection, this is one of my very favorites Each veggie has it s own section in the book Greene writes personal anecdotes and experiences he has had with each vegetable in essays, as well as the history and origins of the food, complete nutritional facts ,and recipes It s just a fantastic thorough and definitive source on vegetables and what to do with them
There are some amazing Weight Watcher friendly recipes and, yes, many that at are dinner party and or holiday only rich There is a delicious recipe for broccoli stems He has two you won t believe how good they are recipes for turnips The artichoke and cold meat salad is something to ring the changes on A classic that sits on my shelf near Claiborne and Franey.
really fun to browse through, historical information about each vegetable, and fun chatty bits, such as Colette s surprising diet look under celery Plus fantastic recipes Madame du Barry s soup does not need any cream.
I must have owned my copy of this for 20 years now I m not much of a recipe book person, but this is a recipe book that you d enjoy even if your idea of cooking is nuking everything in the microwave It s worth it for the anecdotes alone and it might even inspire you to try the recipes.
I m sorry this book is out of print its chief selling point is that, unlike so many contemporary writers, Greene is not afraid to add a little fat in the form of cream, cheese, butter, or olive oil to his veggies
Okay, these recipes are tasty, but when I picked up this all vegetable cookbook I must admit I was looking for something healthy Or at least veggie flavored Greene s dishes taste great because he adds a ton of butter, salt, and bacon to just about everything
I would never have put lemon and potato together until this book
Useful, straight forward and a nice guy He did a book and the cook at the White Dog one year First paperback edition, 4th printing, inscribed signed.
One of my favorite cookbooks ever especially if you enjoy stories about the recipes
Many delicious recipes for vegetables my absolute favorite is the Asparagus and Spinach Soup so good, and good for you.
